Labor Day Weekend, Saturday, September 1, 2018, will see the resurrection of the Wigstock Festival in New York City.
According to the article Lady Bunny & Neil Patrick Harris to Revive ‘Wigstock’ in NYC by dragstarusa.com, “Harris, who was a fan of the festival, was encouraged by his husband, David Burtka, to reach out to Bunny to resurrect the event in light of the resurgence of drag in the advent of RuPaul’s Drag Race.”
Wigstock Festival is a gay community event that started in 1984 with co-founder Lady Bunny. The fabulous event was a performance-filled affair, which served as the unofficial decree of summer in New York City. But unfortunately, it lost steam for two years before it ended in 2001.
The end could be attributed to the change in venue from Tompkins Square Park to Hudson River because of the Giuliani Administration’s prohibition of the event. However, Wigstock did make a few appearances back at Tompkins Square Park in 2003, 2004 and 2005 under an alternate name, Howl Festival.
But there’s no need for a covert name now. Wigstock is back! Just not at Tompkins Square Park. The new location is “on Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport.” And Dragstarusa.com claims the line up for the revived event is quite impressive with a slew of RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants and many other grand drag queen performers from both in the state of New York and out-of-state.
The featured lineup includes: Alaska, Alex Newell, Amanda Lepore, Barbara Tucker, Basil, Bianca Del Rio, Bob the Drag Queen, Candis Cayne, Charlene Incarnate, Darnelle XV, Desmond Is Amazing, Dina Martina, Dita Von Teese, Heklina, Jackie Beat, Jada Valenciaga, Jinkx Monsoon, Joey Arias, Justin Vivian Bond, Kevin Aviance, Latrice Royale, Lina Bradford, Linda Simpson, Lypsinka, Murray Hill, Peaches Christ, Peppermint, Raven O, Sherry Vine, Taylor Mac, Varla Jean Merman and Willam.
