The Great Ocean Road enjoys good PR. Besides Victoria, every state has a scenic drive that steals your breath away.
In Tasmania, it’s the drive from Hobart to Strahan. In the Northern Territory, it’s the Red Centre road from Alice Springs to Ayers Rock (Uluru). In Western Australia, most conjure up The Kimberley in the Outback.
But this author’s vote is The Southern Edge, an extraordinaire experience in a Hyundai hatchback. The Rainbow Roadie spent a fortnight driving from Perth to Esperance and back, with pit stops along the coast that qualify as breathtaking.
Suggested Itinerary for Margaret River Region | Something for every taste and style.
Day 1 Bunbury, Busselton and Dunsborough – Drive from Perth or take train/coach to Bunbury and pick up hire car for starting road trip here. Two stops enroute to Margaret River are mandatory eg photo opportunities like the Busselton Jetty, and artisan and wellness shopping in Dunsborough, the yuppified town that now hosts the Margaret River Wine Festival.
Day 2 Margaret River –Small enough to walk/bike through town, but 10 minutes to the beaches and 20 minutes to venues along Caves Road. (You can drive this scenic road from Dunsborough into MR in 45 min.as alternative to the Bussel Highway.)
Day 3 Beaches & Beyond. Best breaks and waves at Surfers Point, and best swimming at Redgate Beach.
Day 5 Adrenaline Adventures – Stand Up Paddling, 4WD on sand dunes, sea kayaking, river canoeing, guided or self-walk caving experience. Combination tours allow you to do more than one a day. Alternatively, take a mountain bike cycle ride through the vineyards.
Day 6 Drive back to Perth. Allow 3.5 hours along the coast, with pit stops in Mandurah, Rockingham.
