Traveling with friends can either make a friendship better or in some cases, can completely ruin a friendship. We had some neighbors who had never traveled with anyone before. They had some good friends that they would get together with for dinner and cocktails usually once a month for the past 10 or so years. They seemed to enjoy many of the same things in life. Then one day they decided to take a two week trip to Ireland together. From day 3, they got so that they were not even talking with each other and needless to say, it ruined the complete trip for both couples. And now they do not even speak to each other.
We have taken friends on many of our trips across the country and have never had a problem. However we discuss a great many things up front before we take off. Some people are morning people and others are afternoon or evening people. When driving, we like to leave around 8 AM and arrive to the next town around 4 or 5. That gives us plenty of time to relax and have dinner and to get a good nights sleep and then take off again.
Before taking off, you need to plan what type of meals you are going to have. Many years ago we were traveling across the country with a couple and they never thought twice waiting until noon to take off each day.
Most motels and hotels anymore offer a free breakfast so that is not a problem but stopping for lunch has to be a give and take situation. Do your friends want an upscale restaurant to dine or a medium price restaurant or just a fast food option.
