November 6, 2018, brought a lot of surprises, some good and some bad depending on who you’re speaking to but the one victory that we LGBTQIA individuals can certainly cheer about is the gubernatorial won of Jared Polis.
It’s been a twisted road with the Republicans keeping a hold on the Senate and the Democrats swooping in to overturn the House of Representative in their favor. So it’s fair to say that there were wons on both sides of the aisle, which should make everyone somewhat happy for the gains their respective parties achieved.
But there’s one accomplishment that all gays, regardless of party affiliation, should be happy about and that is the historic win of the first openly gay governor of the United States of America. As of the close of this year’s midterm election, Jared Polis is the openly proud gay governor-elect of Colorado.
Candidate Polis beat out his Republican opponent Walker Stapleton in an election that was called before even 80% of votes were tallied. His strong lead with 51.5% of the votes is what propelled him across the finish line to victory.

Before running for Colorado’s Gubernatorial seat, Polis was the state’s Democratic US Representative. But even as a Democrat, Polis made sure to mention in his victory speech that he will work for all Colorado citizens as governor no matter a person’s party affiliation.
Polis goes on to mention his sexual orientation in his victory speech, “I also want to take a moment to acknowledge where we are and how we got here. You know, tonight right here in Colorado we proved that no barrier should stand in the way of pursuing our dreams. We proved that we’re an inclusive state that values every contribution regardless of someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity.”
