It is already illegal to administer conversion therapy on any minor in California but Sacramento lawmakers are pushing it one step further by trying to label Conversion Therapy as fraud — point, blank, period!
On Tuesday, April 10, 2018, a bill that proposed conversion therapy be labeled as fraud passed the Sacramento Judiciary Committee by a vote of 8-1 as reported by the yourcentralvalley.com.
The bill is meant to identify the controversial form of converting a gay person (homosexual person) or bisexual person into a straight person (heterosexual person) as a fraudulent act and deceptive practice. There is no clear evidence ever reported that the pseudoscientific practice, which uses psychological or spiritual interventions (or both) actually works.
The yourcentralvalley.com even mentions, “Conversion therapy is opposed by groups such as the American Medical Association and the American Psychological Association.” But there are backers of the refuted therapy like Pastor Jim Franklin of Fresno’s Cornerstone Church that believe in it.
“‘Something that has been established since the beginning of time now suddenly the “scientists” in Sacramento, now the legislators have determined oh, no, that’s fraud. This is an attack upon our freedoms,’ says Franklin.”
The battle might have been won against conversion therapy in the Judiciary Committee but the war still remains as the bill (officially labeled AB-2943) still has a long way to go as it heads to the Assembly floor next according to the yourcentralvalley.com article. “The legislation cleared a major hurdle on Tuesday, passing in the California Legislature. But much remains to be decided over AB-2943.”
Proponents of AB-2943 are speaking out as well as yourcentralvalley.com reported, “Some local leaders in the gay community say the practice is inhumane. ‘I’ve heard stories through our community, some of the members that have gone through conversion therapy, some have been put through the religious institution or their versions of conversion therapy. Some were dunked in ice baths. Some were even in electrical shock therapy,’ says Leon Velasco Stoll of the LGBT Pink Panthers Movement. Stoll making the case that being gay is biological, trying to turn the argument on opponents. ‘A lot of the individuals that are for the conversion therapy think that it’s a learned behavior, that its a choice a lifestyle. However, my rebuttal to that is when did they choose to be straight,’ says Stoll.”
