Former Vice President Joe Biden launched his “As You Are” campaign on Tuesday, August 7, 2018.
The “As You Are” campaign is Biden’s effort to promote family acceptance of LGBTQ youth.
The Biden Foundation will champion family acceptance by using their resources to “highlight the harm of family rejection, and to left up research, best practices and personal stories to show the importance of family acceptance” as told by Vice President Biden in the newly released campaign video.
Vice President Biden has been a longtime advocate of LGBTQI rights. The former second in commend was the first to support marriage equality publicly during his time in the White House. And before then, he was a vocal advocate for civil unions.
Throughout the victories Vice President Biden has stood on our side, and he knows that our community still has some ways to go to achieving full equality. So he continues to put his best foot forward to champion our causes.
Now he’s gathering his resources in order to help our community’s youth find acceptance in one of the most sensitive and important relationships in their lives. In the video celebrities like Cyndi Lauper and LGBTQI activists share disheartenig statistics about our youth.
“40% of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ. Many of them have been kicked out of their homes or no longer find it safe to stay at home. Gay, lesbian and bisexual youth are 5 times more likely than their straight peers to have attempted suicide.”
To kick off the campaign, the Biden Foundation through the speakers in their video ask the public to visit the “As You Are” webite to share their stories.
“If you are an LGBTQ person who has experienced rejection or acceptance, we want to hear from you. If you are a parent, we want to hear from you. If you are a teacher, a coach, friend, neighbor, co-worker, sibling, or ally, we want to hear from you too.”
Vice Presidnet Biden feels as though sharing stories whether negative or positive will help to change the culture of family acceptance for the better.
